Né en 1961 à New York, John Matos prend le nom de Crash au milieu des années 1970 et commence à poser, dès l’âge de 13 ans, des graffitis sur les lignes de métro du Bronx. En 1979, il rejoint les artistes Kel, Daze, Zephyr, Dondi et Futura au sein du Studio Graffiti, un projet financé par le collectionneur Sam Esses, qui leur permet de passer à la toile.Tous fréquentent alors le mythique Fashion Moda, créé en 1978 par Stefan Eins, lieu culte de la scène new yorkaise où se croisent, entre autres, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer et de nombreux graffiti artists. En 1980, Crash y organise l’exposition au titre prémonitoire “GAS : Graffiti Art Success”. Le succès est en effet tel que, la même année, le New Museum of Contemporary Art de Manhattan reprend l’exposition, légèrement remaniée et intitulée “Events, Fashion Moda”. Les expositions présentées à Fashion Moda attirent alors l’attention des galeries américaines, puis européennes, contribuant à l’essor du mouvement graffiti.

A partir de 1983, et pendant près de dix ans, Crash est représenté par la Sydney Janis Gallery de New York, partageant les cimaises avec Keith Haring et Jean-Michel Basquiat. Fin 1984, il est invité à participer à l’exposition “5/5 Figuration Libre, France/USA” au Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, aux côtés de Rémi Blanchard, François Boisrond, Robert Combas, Hervé et Richard Di Rosa, Louis Jammes, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Tseng Kwong Chi et Kenny Scharf.

Ses oeuvres ont été exposées à travers tous les Etats-Unis, ainsi qu’en Espagne, en France et aux Pays-Bas. Son style reconnaissable allie une pratique du lettrage propre au graffiti à celle du portrait inspiré de la bande dessinée, du Pop Art ou encore du procédé Ben-Day cher à Roy Lichtenstein. En marge de ses expositions, Crash réalise également plusieurs projets pour de grandes marques, comme pour la fondation néerlandaise Peter Stuyvesant en 1988, ou pour la compagnie British American Tabacco et la collection Lucky Strike en 1995. En 1996, il customise une guitare électrique – le modèle Stratocaster de la marque Fender – pour Eric Clapton que le chanteur utilisera lors d’une tournée en 2001. Fender en commercialisera cinquante exemplaires baptisés Crashocasters. Plus récemment, il a créé un visuel pour Absolut Vodka. En 2011, la maison TUMI lui a passé commande pour quatre modèles de bagages dans une ligne intitulée Tumi-Tag.

Les oeuvres de Crash ont été acquises par un nombre impressionnant de collections publiques ou privées à travers le monde comme le Brooklyn Museum et le MoMA à New York, le NOMA de La Nouvelle Orleans, le Cornell Museum en Floride, la Rubell Collection à Miami, la fondation Frederick R. Weisman à Los Angeles, la fondation Dakis Joannou à Athènes, le Mambo de Bologne, le Groninger Museum de Groningen, le musée Boijmans Van Beuningen de Rotterdam, le Stedelijk Museum d’Amsterdam...
